Chomp

Eat the dots. Dodge the ghosts. A free one-tap game.

Play nowTap to pick the turn · Hold to turn back

Chomp is a one-button maze chase. Your blob runs through a little maze on its own, eating dots as it goes, while four ghosts wander and hunt. You never steer with a joystick: an arrow sits on the next junction, and each tap cycles it between straight, left and right. Corners turn you automatically. Grab a gold power pellet and the ghosts turn blue for a few seconds, so you can chase them down for big points. Clear every dot and a fresh maze appears, with faster ghosts. There's a new maze every day and friends' ghost blobs racing the same corridors.

How to play Chomp

  1. Tap once to wake the blob. It runs straight and takes corners by itself.
  2. Watch the arrow on the next junction. Each tap cycles it: straight, then left, then right.
  3. Hold for a moment to turn around on the spot when a ghost blocks the corridor.
  4. Eat every dot to clear the maze. Touching a ghost ends the run, unless it's blue.

Tips to get a high score

Why the ghosts catch up with you

Two things push the ghosts harder: time and mazes cleared. Over the first 70 seconds of a run they go from well under half your speed to about three-quarters of it, and you speed up a little too. Every maze you clear then adds another step on top, so on later mazes they keep getting faster. By roughly the sixth maze a hunting ghost is as quick as you are.

The ghosts also wake sooner on each new maze. On the first one they leave the middle one at a time, at about 1, 4, 10 and 20 seconds, and that gap shrinks maze by maze. Later mazes have more walls too, which means fewer junctions and longer corridors to get trapped in.

Every 25 seconds the ghosts take a breather and head for their corners. Early on that break lasts about 8 seconds. As the pressure builds it shrinks to about 2.

Where the points are

Every dot is one point, and so is each of the four gold pellets in the corners. Eating a blue ghost is worth 5 points, the next one in the same power-up is worth 10, then 15, then 20. Catch all four and that's 50 points from a single pellet, as many as 50 dots.

Blue time gets shorter as the run goes on, from about 7 seconds down to about 3.5. A pellet only turns ghosts that are already out of the middle, and blue ghosts move slowly. So the best time for a pellet is when several ghosts are close by, not when the maze around you is empty.

A good plan is to save the corner pellets. Clear the middle and the long side corridors first. Then go for a pellet only when ghosts are closing in, so it saves you and pays you at the same time. An eaten ghost goes back to the middle and comes out again about 2.5 seconds later.

Know your four ghosts

The ghosts don't all hunt the same way. One follows the real shortest path to you through the maze. Another aims for a spot about four tiles ahead of where you're facing, so it tends to cut you off at the next junction rather than chase you.

The third chases less often and makes more random turns. The fourth is shy: it heads toward you from a distance, but once it gets within about six tiles it backs off toward a corner. The ghost that is really dangerous up close is usually one of the first two.

Ghosts can't turn back in a corridor unless a pellet makes them, but you can. A hold of about a sixth of a second reverses you on the spot. When a ghost shows up at the far end of a corridor, turning around is often safer than racing it to the junction.

FAQ

How do I turn with only one button?

The blob turns by itself at corners. At junctions it follows the arrow, and each tap cycles the arrow to the next open exit. Holding the button turns you around.

Do the ghosts get faster?

Yes. They speed up over time and with every maze you clear, and they spend less time wandering and more time hunting you.

Is it free?

Yes. Every Tapamine game is free to play in your browser with no download and no account.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. Tapamine is built for phones first: portrait, one thumb, and it works offline after your first visit. It also works with a mouse or the spacebar on a computer.

How do challenges work?

After a run, tap “Challenge a friend” to send a link. Your friend plays the exact same level and races your ghost — a replay of your run — to see who wins.
