Barrel is a one-tap take on the classic girder-climbing arcade game. Your blob walks up a zig-zag tower of sloped steel girders on its own and climbs every ladder it reaches. Up top, a grumpy brute keeps rolling barrels down the slopes. They tumble off the end of each girder onto the next one, straight at you. Tap to jump. Every ladder you climb is a floor, every fifth floor is a new stage, and the brute only gets angrier. There's a new tower every day, and friends' ghosts climb beside you.
How to play Barrel
- Your blob walks and climbs by itself. You only control the jump.
- Tap anywhere to jump over a barrel rolling toward you.
- Climb a ladder to reach the next girder. Every ladder is one floor.
- Touch a barrel and the run is over. Grab the gold coins floating over the girders by jumping through them.
Tips to get a high score
- Jump when the barrel is about a hand's width away, so you're at the top of your jump as it passes under you.
- Watch the girder above you: barrels drop off its low end and land right in front of you.
- Red barrels with a white dot bounce. Time your jump so you pass over one while it's low.
- Your blob ducks at the top of a ladder while a barrel rolls past, so you never pop up into one.
- Clear barrels jump after jump for a streak. Every third barrel in a row drops a coin, and a jump that clears nothing resets the streak.
How the brute gets angrier
Barrel's difficulty runs on time, not on how high you've climbed. At the start the brute throws a barrel about every two seconds. Over roughly the first 70 seconds that drops to about one every 1.3 seconds, and the barrels roll about two-thirds faster. Your blob walks a little faster too, so you get through each girder sooner.
That isn't the end of it. For about another minute the brute keeps speeding up. By around two minutes in he throws a barrel every two-thirds of a second, and they roll faster still. That pace is what ends most long runs.
Bouncing barrels start about 20 seconds in. They become more common until, by about 45 seconds, roughly one throw in three is a bouncer.
Floors are the score
Only ladders score. Each ladder you finish climbing adds one floor, and every fifth floor starts a new stage. Jumping barrels keeps you alive and builds your streak, which drops a coin every third barrel in a row. Coins are only for hats and don't count toward your score.
So the plan for a long run is simple: keep moving and take no extra risks. A coin hanging over a girder is only worth jumping for if you'd be jumping there anyway. A wasted jump also breaks your streak and leaves you landing at a bad moment.
Ladders are your safe spots. While you're climbing, barrels can't touch you, and near the top your blob waits until the girder above is clear. You can even grab a ladder in the middle of a jump.
Timing jumps on a crowded girder
A jump lasts a bit over half a second, and you can't jump again until you land. Barrels that have already rolled past you are harmless, so you only need to worry about what's coming down the slope at you, plus anything dropping off the girder above.
A fast barrel that catches up with a slower one rolls right behind it instead of passing it. That makes a pair arrive nose to tail. Treat the pair as one long obstacle and jump a little earlier than you would for a single barrel, so you're still in the air as the second one passes.
For a bouncer, the timing is about the hop, not the distance. Watch it bounce once or twice as it comes toward you, and jump so it reaches you at the bottom of a hop.
Daily levels and ghost races
Today's Barrel level is the same for everyone, and you race the ghosts of other players' runs. How daily levels and challenges work.
FAQ
Do I control where my blob walks?
No. It walks up each girder and climbs each ladder on its own. Your only job is timing the jumps, which makes it easy to play with one thumb.
Does it get harder?
Yes. Barrels roll faster and come more often as the run goes on. Bouncing barrels show up about 20 seconds in, and past the first minute the brute keeps throwing faster until someone slips.
Is it free?
Yes. Every Tapamine game is free to play in your browser with no download and no account.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes. Tapamine is built for phones first: portrait, one thumb, and it works offline after your first visit. It also works with a mouse or the spacebar on a computer.
How do challenges work?
After a run, tap “Challenge a friend” to send a link. Your friend plays the exact same level and races your ghost — a replay of your run — to see who wins.
